7-Azaindole-3-acetic acid derivatives: Potent and selective CRTh2 receptor antagonists

High throughput screening identified a 7-azaindole-3-acetic acid scaffold as a novel CRTh2 receptor antagonist chemotype, which could be optimised to furnish a highly selective compound with good functional potency for inhibition of human eosinophil shape change in whole blood and oral bioavailability in the rat.     

PHOTOLYTIC LIPIDS FROM VISUAL PIGMENTS

A method is described for the preservation of iodopsin, the labile photopigment of daylight vision, by freeze drying in vacuo. The lipids released by the action of light on rhodopsin and iodopsin are found to be similar and to possess a labile absorption spectrum in chloroform, with a rising peak at about 390 mµ and a declining peak in the region of 470 mµ. After the change is complete the absorption spectrum resembles closely that of retinene.     

Aspects of the distribution of HbS in the United States

Frequencies of HbS obtained by several screening clinics are analyzed for age, sex, and location effects. All seem to be present in some form, though age and sex effects may be conditional on location. An attempt is made to elaborate the common observation of increasing frequency with age. This is shown to be the result of differences in fertility favoring the normal. A simulation which íncludes 25% admixture was done. The results indicate a genetically relevant New World experience for the population to be about 9–12 generations with the heterozygote having fitness of 0.96–0.99.

The Organization of Slave Raids in Dulotic Ants — a Comparative Study (Hymenoptera; Formicidae)

Slavemaking occurs in 8 genera or ants belonging to 2 subfamilies. Their raiding behaviour is described and compared. The basic organisation of a raid comprises scouting, recruitment, fight, and brood transportation. These elements can ordinarily be derived from the behaviour of the independent host species. Certain trends in the evolution of recruitment and fighting behaviour are discussed. “Intraspecific slavery”, which has been described by various authors, probably belongs to territorial behaviour. We doubt whether it represents an evolutionary precursor of true, interspecific slavery.     

Histochemical profiles of guinea-pig intrafusal fibres in normal muscles and after denervation, cordotomy and tenotomy

Synopsis Histochemical profiles of intrafusal fibres were analysed in normal muscles and in denervated, cordotomized and tenotomized preparations. Based on ATPase activity at polar regions, normal intrafusal fibres were classified as (I) ATPase-light fibres showing low or low-moderate activity when pre-incubated in either an acid or alkaline medium; (2) ATPase-dark fibres demonstrating high activity when preincubated in either an acid or alkaline medium and (3) ATPase-reversing fibres displaying low to moderate activity when pre-incubated in an acid medium, but showing high activity when pre-incubated in an alkaline medium. Four weeks after nerve section contrasting responses were seen between intrafusal fibre types. The ATPase-reversing fibres showed large decreases in polar cross-sectional area and NADH-diaphorase (NADH-D) activity, whereas fibres of the ATPase-light and ATPase-dark types were less subject to atrophy and their NADH-D levels were frequently increased. This differential effect suggests that ATPase-reversing fibres are trophically more dependent on neural innervation than ATPase-light and ATPase-dark fibres. After cordotomy and tenotomy no such marked differential responses were noted between fibre types.
